Aromatherapy 4 Pets
What is aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is an excellent natural therapy for horses and dogs, not for cats though. Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils as a therapy to certain physical and mental ailments. When essential oils penetrate the bloodstream, they release their components that act on the various systems of the body and promote self-healing.
Animals react well to it and it is easy to use as long as you know which essential oils to use on your pets.
Clay is at its highest activity when moist, and should be renewed or replace after 2 hours. However, it can stay on for many more hours as long as it moist. Dried clay paste on the skin or coat is actually quite uncomfortable!
Here are the profiles of the herbs that can be given to horses. Don't forget that herbs are medicine and you should consult your veterinarian when required.
How to make an ointment or balm that can then be used on your pets.
You will need the following:
Utensils:
Bain-marie: this can be achieved with a sauce pan filled with water and a heat-proof dish that you put in the sauce pan. Make sure the water doesn't overflow when the dish is in the pan.
a spatula
a measuring cup
a kitchen scale
a dark coloured jar with a lid that can hold 120 ml
Ingredients:
90 ml of oil. It is best to use an oil that has a long shelf life like olive or soy bean.
10 ml of coconut oil to make a richer balm (optional).
7 g of beeswax or more. Some recipes recommend 4 parts of oil for 1 part of beeswax. Natural unrefined beeswax is the best
Essential oils / tincture / infused oils of your choice
If you are not using coconut oil, then you will need to have 100 ml of the main oil.
If you want your ointment to be thicker, add more beeswax, or less beeswax if you wish to have it quite runny.
Put the oil and beeswax in the heat-proof dish in the bain-marie to melt. Stir until all the beeswax is melted. Remove form heat. Wait until it cools down a little and add the Essential oils / tincture / infused oils. Stir and pour in the jar, close the lid properly.
Your ointment will be ready in few hours, depending on the temperature of the room. you can speed up the solidification by putting the jar in cold water or in the fridge.
