Herbology is the use of plants for healing and their therapeutic value. Herb plants produce and contain a variety of chemical compounds that act upon the body and are used to prevent or treat disease and promote health and well being.

The earliest recorded herbal use by humans dates back to 2500BC, it is certain that they were used widely even prior to that time. The word Herb refers to any part of any plant having nutritional and medicinal values. Therefore a herb may be a bark, flower, fruit, leaf or root.

The horse in order to survive in the wild would graze on a wide variety of plants, they had an inbuilt awareness and instinct for what plants were harmful and what were beneficial. Horses would often select different plants at different times to meet their individual and dietary health needs. Domesticated horses however don’t get this option, even paddocked horses are on land that is over run and doesn’t have a big variety of plants. By supplementing the diet of the domesticated horse with herbs, we are aiming to replace what he is not getting by naturally roaming and grazing large areas.

We offer a variety of herbs and we will offer herbal blends at a later stage, and there is information on each herb on the web site. There are also many very good books available.

Any herbs purchased should be stored to the following guideline:

  1. Store your dried herbs in air tight containers or zip closing bags will do,
  2. Be sure to label and date your containers,
  3. Discard any dried herbs that show the slightest sign of mould,
  4. Place containers in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.

There are many combinations of herbs that can be fed to suit a variety of ailments however a veterinarian’s advice should always be sought first. Any substance that has a physiological effect on the body should always be used with much caution. Herbal remedies that have an effect, do so because of the substances they contain, which can be both beneficial or harmful.
